Hello, Cape Bretoners! I am a Scottish Ethnology student at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. For my third year "Scottish Emigrant Traditions" course, we have been asked to analyse symbols that contribute to Cape Breton's collective identity and sense of community. What has helped to maintain your connection to An t-Seann Dùthaich (‘The Old Country’) through the generations?

If you would like to submit a response to this query, kindly e-mail me at R.McLellan-2@sms.ed.ac.uk. I look forward to hearing from you.

All the best,
Resa

I have been all over PEI and about 4 years ago I had the chance to visit Cape Breton. I left my heart there and for the past 4 years I have been trying to figure out how to buy something that I can afford there. I love your island. I am actually planning a trip as of next week to look at a few properties that are for sale and in my price range. Wish me luck. So I feel for all of you who left your home for one reason or another. There is a man who has made some songs about your island and his name is J.P. Cormier and he comes from Cheticamp and his song are great and some a little sad.

An incredible photo! And what an awesome ride.

We cycled the route counter-clockwise a few years ago - basically 100km per day for 3 days. The first day was from Baddeck to Dingwall in wicked wind & rain; the second day to Cheticamp was in brilliant sunshine. Cape Breton is definitely a ride we would recommend.

Susan, your experience reminds me of a family from the States that wanted to move to Cape Breton, it took them a number of years to get their Visa. The husband ended up applying for a grant through ECBC to start a wood-working business. That granted him a Visa and they moved to Cape Breton. Many people also retire in Cape Breton from all around the world. Hope it works out for you!
Take care,
Isaac

Hi, really enjoy your blog. So good to revisit all my experiences from my 2006 trip--they had to drag me out of the country, I was so in love with everything. I can't get your gorgeous home out of my head and heart and consider emmigration from the States. Any advice? Yes I'd have to work although I'm almost 60, retirement's not in sight. Enjoy. and Thanks
